Radiologic interpretation of central venous catheter placement.
When used in veterinary medicine, central venous catheters are typically inserted through the external jugular vein, with their caudal extension within the cranial vena cava. Radiographic or fluoroscopic guidance is recommended to assist in correctly placing these catheters. This article provides radiologic examples of common central venous catheter malpositions and complications.

tive technique for the percutaneous insertion of large-bore catheters into blood vessels that allowed for the application of angiocatheters for angiography. The Seldinger technique for central venous catheter (CVC) placement is ubiquitous in medical practice and the procedure is well known. Briefly, the procedure involves introducing a percutaneous needle into the vessel, passing a guidewire th...
متن کاملRisk of Stroke in Hypertensive Diabetic Chronic Kidney Disease Patients after Central Venous Catheter placement
Background: Stroke is the leading cause of death in patients with kidney failure. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is strongly associated with stroke with various purported mechanisms proposed and End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are in a condition where both kidneys are impaired and require kidney transplantation or dialysis, and unfortunately, the number of patients with ESRD has grown rap...
متن کاملThe carina as a landmark in central venous catheter placement.
Location of the tip of a central venous catheter (CVC) within the pericardium has been associated with potentially lethal cardiac tamponade. Because the pericardium cannot be seen on chest x-ray (CXR), an alternative radiographic marker is needed for correct placement of CVCs. The anatomy of the region was studied in 34 cadavers. The carina was a mean (SEM) distance of 0.4 (0.1) cm above the pe...
متن کاملUnusual Placement of a Central Venous Catheter: Left Pericardiophrenic Vein
A 62-year-old man presented to the emergency department with hypotension and diarrhea secondary to Clostridium difficile infection. Due to poor peripheral access, a left internal jugular vein triple lumen central venous catheter (CVC) was inserted for fluid resuscitation. The CVC was placed under real-time ultrasound guidance, which revealed normal anatomy, with no resistance during placement. ...
